There are a few different ‘veils’ in the bible or veil references. Really quickly here are a few of the veils in the bible:
- there is the veil in the tent blocking of the holy of holies.
A thick curtain separated the Holy of Holies from the Holy Place. This curtain, known as the “veil,” was made of fine linen and blue, purple and scarlet yarn. There were figures of cherubim (angels) embroidered onto it. Cherubim, spirits who serve God, were in the presence of God to demonstrate His almighty power and majesty. They also guarded the throne of God. These cherubim were also on the innermost layer of covering of the tent. If one looked upward, they would see the cherubim figures.
The word “veil” in Hebrew means a screen, divider or separator that hides. What was this curtain hiding? Essentially, it was shielding a holy God from sinful man. Whoever entered into the Holy of Holies was entering the very presence of God. In fact, anyone except the high priest who entered the Holy of Holies would die. Even the high priest, God’s chosen mediator with His people, could only pass through the veil and enter this sacred dwelling once a year, on a prescribed day called the Day of Atonement. Link
- More figuratively or metaphorically speaking, or maybe not, Jesus was basically God veiled in a human body. Remember, we are not perfect and therefore can never see Gods glory directly. We experience Him through veils of different sorts.
- Moses asks to see God but man cannot withstand the glory of God directly so God tells Moses to stand in a crack in the rock to be shielded and Moses basically saw the after glow of God.
As my glorious presence passes by, I will hide you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Exodus 33:22
- The veil of this world. We see dimly all things considered, but when we die or Christ comes back, that veil will be lifted and we’ll see things 100% as they are. We have a lot of questions, why does God do this or that, all those will be answered immediately when we come into the presence of Him.
1st Corinthians 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
The final one is what I was interested in when thinking of writing this blog. We live in a world that we ‘think’ we understand and see. Many of the common veils described in the bible veil God glory. On this earth, we are both veiled from His glory but also from the supernatural realm which isn’t all happy happy, righteousness. This world is governed by satan at this time, its his domain although God limits his movements to some extent.
What we think we see in the natural world is only 3 dimensions, 4 really if you include time. This world though is made up of 10 or so dimensions that scientists have determined, ones we cannot directly see but we recognize the effects of. Read up on String Theory
(from the string theory wikipedia article linked above) An intriguing feature of string theory is that it predicts extra dimensions. In classical string theory the number of dimensions is not fixed by any consistency criterion. However, in order to make a consistent quantum theory, string theory is required to live in a spacetime of the so-called “critical dimension”: we must have 26 spacetime dimensions for the bosonic string and 10 for the superstring. This is necessary to ensure the vanishing of the conformal anomaly of the worldsheet conformal field theory. Modern understanding indicates that there exist less-trivial ways of satisfying this criterion. Cosmological solutions exist in a wider variety of dimensionalities, and these different dimensions are related by dynamical transitions. The dimensions are more precisely different values of the “effective central charge”, a count of degrees of freedom that reduces to dimensionality in weakly curved regimes.
So you think you understand this world right? Well if we consider what the bible already suggests, and what scientists are coming around to figure out, there are many realities that we cannot experience. The most obvious example is the supernatural world where satan and his demons (and angels and God as well) dwell or can dwell. God is omnipresent but evidence suggests angels don’t and never had that ability – i.e. to be in more than one place at a time. So if you consider the supernatural world being RIGHT there with you, just not something you can sense, there could also be 10, 50, 1000 angels and demons around you staring at you, centimetres from your face – and there are basically. The bible describes demons a lot, being IN humans as well as being around them.
If you know Jesus Christ as saviour, you literally have the Holy spirit inside of you basically watching out for you and protecting you from evil forces in other dimensions.
The whole point is, we need to be keenly and presently aware of the fact that what we see is not all there is and there IS a God and there are also foes out to hurt you and keep you away from God in this world.
The supernatural world is all around you. Think about that for a while and make sure you know what your plan is when you finally see those extra dimensions when you die! You need to know Christ as your personal saviour and king otherwise you’ll default to satins side. Thats the truth!
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
