The Root Of All Evil

I’m probably the first one to jump on the bandwagon of hate and prejustice. I think as north american christians we are almost taught that its about the ’cause’. Abortion is bad, harry potter is bad, cards are bad. And then the other end of the spectrum, that muslims are our enemies, other religions are from the devil, every country that isn’t free and democratic should be overthrown. And these are touchy subjects, everyone has their limits, their PC’ness that won’t let them personally say too much and that line is ALL over the map in christian circles.

Now, I DO believe that any religion that doesn’t teach Christ and His death on the cross for our sins evil, anything not FOR Christ is ‘antichrist’. I don’t think any christian can argue that though we are so scared to say that stuff.

However, where we all quickly falter in finger pointing and blame and self righteousness, is that we often forget that no matter the subject, the issue, the cause, the root of it is sin.

We can’t look at others and name thing without always boiling it down to the basic fake that there is some kind of sin. Greed, pride, whatever. It boils down to this, they either don’t know God or have rejected Him straight up.

I think when we look at the hot topics, geo politics, our ‘fight the good fight’ battles in Afganistan, we need to also understand that there are both people who simply haven’t heard about Jesus and then there are those who have flat out rejected Him.

We need to hate people a lot less because of the ‘thing’ they are into or the religion they are in and see that it all comes down to one thing, they need Jesus and without Jesus, nothing will change.

We do need to be vocal about abortion and things like that but we need an equal amount of effort telling them about Jesus. Cause if everyone has Jesus and we ALL are trying to live like Him, all these hot button topics will melt away. Sometimes battles need to be fought but we need equal parts on action specific to the cause and action specific to the people involved, like prayer, sharing of Gods word, simply showing Gods love etc.

Bottom line, behind every topic, religion, problem in this world is sin and once we recognize that, I think we’re much better equipped to tackle it.

Attack the sickness, not the symptom

(btw, I love how God doesn’t pull any punches, no political correctness here. You GO God!)

Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. 26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

NOTE: I am the first to say I’m a sinner too, saved by grace and hopefully never a target of a bandwagon cause that probably doesn’t even start to solve the real issues anyways…

  1. Well written article. Although I am not s sure we need Jesus. We need love. I was raised that Jesus is love. God is love. Jesus died for our sins – maybe. I was raised as Christian but never have felt a faith or presence of God. I do believe in a higher energy – but not so sure about one God. I think it would better ti teach about love, and allow each person to make their own decisions.
    Enjoyed your perspective.

  2. I believe the bible when it says man is inherently wicked, his heart anyways:
(NKJV) Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?

So where can the love come from if there isn’t a God of love first? If there is no God of love, where does love come from and why would anyone bother loving others? I think people need a reason to love and th at reason is that they see themselves as needing Christ first, and then love can flow through them
