What is it?
Enter your Diaspora “seed,” a personal web server that stores all of your information and shares it with your friends. Diaspora knows how to securely share (using GPG) your pictures, videos, and more. When you have a Diaspora seed of your own, you own your social graph, you have access to your information however you want, whenever you want, and you have full control of your online identity. Once we have built a solid foundation, we will make Diaspora easy to extend to facilitate any type of communication, and the possibilities will be endless.
Ok, where to start…I have to applaud the guys creating this, great idea. BUT… So now we’re going BACK (the pendulum has swung) to having personal websites (like mine, micahgallant.com) and having widgets or links which connect it back to the larger group of sites in the Dispora (um, so like Webrings? Those html snippets we all used to put on our site to connect us to other sites of like interests).
Its all been done before, but of course… not in web 2.0 :/ . Crazy, … STILL… I have to encourage the idea here. I recommend all people build their own sites for the following reasons:
- the chance to learn something, to figure it out, to add skills to your resume in an online world
- and I’m sure there are MANY more reasons…
I’m on facebook, but I’d love it much more if people took the time to create their own websites!
