The ‘goto’ device

»Posted by on Jan 11, 2012 in General | 0 comments

I posted before about my experience with the iPad when my macbook was out of commission. Now that the full cycle has occurred – had macbook, was without macbook, have macbook back – I can say again that the iPad is 90% there but for efficiency in more power user projects, I definitely gravitate to the macbook. In some cases, I really have no choice, in others, its just easier as a whole to do them on the macbook. Example, blogs, I’m writing this blog on my macbook. Initially I grabbed my ipad and bluetooth keyboard, ready for a session with Blogsy (my chosen – and paid for – blog writing IOS app). Then I thought, Oh, my macbook is good to go, how about I use that. Why? couple of reasons: bigger screen, larger ‘desktop’...

iPad Remote

My quest last week was to look for software with which one could stream music FROM the iPad to a Windows PC running XP. Long story but there is no Apple encouraged method for that. There are some methods using Win 7 and its own media software, I think using DNLA or whatever its called. And you would be surprised at the lack too, there are TONS of apps for streaming from cloud services or from your pc or Mac TO you iPad but from iPad to devices, unless its an apple device compatible with airplay, you’re basically out of luck. The first solution was airmusic. You install it on your pc, shows up as an airplay device to the iPad and you can stream video / audio. Thats if it works Didn’t work very well for me, kept crashing. It requires Quicktime, and...

Vlogs – whats the deal?

»Posted by on Nov 7, 2011 in General | 0 comments

I’ve been blogging I guess for a couple of years now and I’ve seen vlogs. To me they are a bit too upfront / real… Blogging, and reading blogs has for me become an excellent morning newspaper type of experience. ie, you get your coffee, get some breakfast on the table for your kid(s) and sit down for 5 minutes and check the news. The thing about blogs (as opposed to vlogs) is that you can load up the page and read it at your leisure. No speed reading needed, or dedicated attention, if said ‘kid’ goes crazy, you can rescue them mid sentence, and come back to the blog and keep going.  A vlog on the other hand requires dedicated attention, watching AND listening and is something you have to commit to. Sure, you can pause it,.. but it...

Gmail to Google Apps Mail Migration

»Posted by on Oct 24, 2011 in General | 0 comments

So I had a problem, how to migrate from my single gmail account to my domain based google apps account. Simple you would think, surely has a tool specifically for ‘google to google’ accounts. If you thought that you would be wrong. The no brainer way is to setup a fetch on the new account to login gmail via POP and download emails the old school way. Well for me and 16k emails, the gmail server stopped responding to google apps requests for more email after about 250 :/ The solution I found was to download MS Exchange to Google apps migraiton tool. It has an option for generic IMAP to google apps which is really slick. Using the generic option, you can configure it to check IMAP on your gmail account, and transfer all the email, folders and...

The Steve Jobs Post

»Posted by on Oct 6, 2011 in General | 0 comments

Normally I don’t write about specific people like this, at least not when Layton died, or Michael Jackson died. I figure its a subject though that I have enough opinion on to make a blog post (there aren’t too many things though that I don’t have opinions on though ) I think its the beginning of the end for Apple. Steve Jobs was a co-founder of apple with Wozniak (?) and I think another who started out making computers as a bit of a hobby. They founded apple, and Steve was subsequently released, or fired or something, after which the company started going downhill. After 10 years of that or so they brought him back to lead the company and he brought the company back to life and to one of the top few leading companies in the world in cellphone...
