The CHEAPEST is to grow your own – maybe. The next best is probably free ranging / foraging plus the ‘scratch’ feed from the local CO-OP. This feed is basically the combination of the grains I was adding before but they already do the mixing! I didn’t realize this was an option but its cracked corn, wheat and oats mixed up, and they call it ‘scratch’. this is sufficient in my estimation as long as your birds can also forage for themselves what they need for the rest of their diet, including more protein gotten by way of insects that they find.
The cost of this is comparable to one bag of whole wheat, or whole oats as example so having them do the mixing cuts out some of the work involved!
